Untap Combo and the Unreprinted Faerie Tax: How Knacksaw Clique Turned an Eighteen-Year-Old Shadowmoor Rare into a Listing Price on cEDH Kinnan Tables

If that rare Shadowmoor faerie from 2008 long sat as a cold blue-untap spare part, and if most people who heard *Knacksaw Clique* only remembered flying, untap-to-reactivate, and the Oracle line that lets you play the top of an opponent's library, then the secondary market of October 2026 rewrote the same piece of cardboard into another kind of listing. Draftsim's weekly spikes piece (covering October 17–23, page updated 2026-10-23) moved it from about $4 to trading over $12. Wargamer (updated 2026-10-23) is steeper: about $2.80 in August to over $18 today, with foils selling as high as about $200 even off mint. The image that runs through this piece is that already-printed, almost-never-reprinted untap-combo tax. The tax line has lain on the card face for eighteen years. What lifted it into a listing price was *Kinnan, Bonder Prodigy* list density on cEDH tables, stacked on Shadowmoor's single-print supply.

I cross-checked Draftsim's weekly spikes, Wargamer's spike write-up, and Scryfall live prices. Boards differ by a few dollars; the direction matches. This piece only cites public readings I verified. In the same Draftsim week, *Dark Matter Manipulator* (*Reality Fracture*) ran from about $1.50 to about $7.50 — a new-set face spike. Knacksaw's line does not ride a new set. It rides old paper, an old combo, and a print that never reached The List or a bonus sheet.

1. From Shadowmoor spare part to a Kinnan-table listing

Industry default logic is clean, and therefore lazy.

A Shadowmoor rare released 2008-05-02 almost always gets the same story. Blue untap. Small flyer. Useful but replaceable. The card face (Scryfall Shadowmoor #42, artist Steven Belledin) looks like that part. Flying. Pay {1}{U} and untap ({Q}): target opponent exiles the top card of their library; until end of turn, you may play that card. Untap lets it tap, untap, and activate again in the same turn. Default logic almost writes itself. Old rare, parasitic on a narrow combo, not a new-set face — price should sit in the few-dollar cold bin.

*Kinnan, Bonder Prodigy* breaks that default. Scryfall (Ikoria) nonfoil is about $17.26 at fetch. Wargamer nails the driver as cEDH. Modern and Pioneer-scale formats do not enter this ledger. Kinnan decks with Knacksaw topped several cEDH events, including an 80-player Topdeck Invitational in August. Draftsim's same week writes the spike as cEDH Kinnan, and stresses the card was printed once in Shadowmoor, never reprinted — not even on bonus sheets or The List. Once lists stack on high-competition tables, shared parts rise with them. The old faerie eats the narrowest, oldest line on that untap-combo tax sheet.

The timeline is harder than slogans. Wargamer moves August about $2.80 to over $18 today. Draftsim's week moves about $4 to trading over $12, with NM listings higher. Scryfall at write time (2026-10-24): nonfoil about $12.96, foil about $75.88. Boards differing by a few dollars is common. Print is what stays hard. Eighteen years, one print run, no bargain reprint to push the floor back down. Wargamer adds a line posters often bury: people called it underrated for a decade. Thin supply means that without a reprint, the price may stay elevated.

2. Untap: Mantle, Rite, and Training Grounds

The {Q} on the card face is what the market now reads as the listing driver.

The board state can be named piece by piece. *Paradise Mantle* or *Cryptolith Rite* lets creatures tap for mana. Knacksaw taps for blue, untaps, activates again, taps again. Stack Kinnan's mana doubling and one blue becomes two. Opponents' library tops exile layer by layer; you play those cards the same turn. Wargamer writes this as an infinite untap loop that has existed for a long time. Today's reprice does not need a newly printed face that "makes the combo legal."

*Training Grounds* shaves activation cost another step. Generic mana in activated costs can drop by one, so the combo can turn without Kinnan's doubling. Three parts stack on one old faerie; cEDH tables and collector foils share one supply line. Scryfall at write: Paradise Mantle nonfoil about $9.72, Cryptolith Rite about $14.79, Training Grounds about $9.07. The parts themselves are not cheap. What still drains listings is Knacksaw's never-reprinted rare print.

Foil rides a separate curve. Wargamer writes foils selling as high as about $200 even off mint, with few foil sales on TCGPlayer. Scryfall foil about $75.88 still leaves a gap against those sale rumors. Thin supply is already tight in nonfoil. Foil is thinner. Players copying lists grab playable nonfoil first. Collector premium walks another listing. Listings follow cEDH list density; print depth decides how many prices can sit on the same Oracle text.

3. Same-week contrast: Reality Fracture is not this spike's premise

Watch only Knacksaw and the story shrinks to "a Shadowmoor rare got expensive." Pull the lens to *Dark Matter Manipulator* in the same Draftsim weekly spikes piece, and two parallel ledgers appear that should not collapse into one sentence about "everything rising in October."

Dark Matter Manipulator is a *Reality Fracture* new print. Draftsim's week moves it from about $1.50 to about $7.50, roughly +500%. Demand sits in Modern Rakdos Delirium playsets and some Legacy Hogaak. Scryfall nonfoil at write about $7.63. It eats new-set exposure and current-format lists. Knacksaw eats another ledger. No new card "caused" this spike. Wargamer is blunt: the driver is cEDH, not the usual big formats. What moved the price is an already-existing infinite combo being revalued. Kinnan tables check the old part as a near-auto include. Shadowmoor's single print decides supply cannot match clicks.

Both spikes can sit in the same Draftsim weekly list. One rides a Reality Fracture new face. One rides an eighteen-year unreprinted faerie. This piece's spine is the latter. Contrast only has to make clear that a new set is not required. Readers who keep only a poster line will blame every October old-card spike on Reality Fracture. Knacksaw's line splits that attribution. List density is cEDH. Print is 2008. The combo has lain on the card face for eighteen years.

4. Return: list density times single-print supply

What this move rewrites is Knacksaw Clique's place on the timeline.

Before the results wave, it could be written as a cold blue-untap spare part. After Kinnan put Mantle- or Rite-backed untap loops back into cEDH top cuts, results like an 80-player invitational wrote click volume into listings. Draftsim's week writes about $4 to over $12. Wargamer writes August about $2.80 to over $18 today, foil sales up to about $200. Scryfall at write: nonfoil about $12.96, foil about $75.88. Numbers will keep wobbling. Single-print supply and cEDH list density will not vanish with the poster.

The multiplier secondary markets have been writing onto listings these days is list density times single-print supply. Single-card myth only grabs eyes. Under the eyes sit Kinnan event results, the untap combo, Shadowmoor never reprinted, and the same-week Dark Matter Manipulator Reality Fracture contrast. Tear the poster off and the ledger remains.

Readers who want one trail can open three pages at once. Scryfall's Knacksaw Clique (Shadowmoor #42) and *Kinnan, Bonder Prodigy* pages for Oracle and live price. Wargamer's 2026-10-23 spike piece for 2.80 to over 18, foil about 200, and Topdeck Invitational. Draftsim's October 17–23 weekly spikes for about 4 to over 12, and the already-fixed sentence that it was printed once and never reprinted. Numbers will keep moving. The eighteen-year faerie tax line has already been re-priced by cEDH list density.
